PHR Programme 

Project Health Resilience (PHR) provides health education sessions for young people aged 16-19 years old, at no cost, in schools, colleges and youth settings, to between 10 and 20 young people per session.

Programme Modules

The programme is made up of four health literacy modules, which have been developed by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors and public health professionals. 

  • Access to Healthcare
  • Medical Emergencies
  • Mental Health Resilience
  • Preventative Health

These modules are delivered by doctors and public health professionals who specialise in these topic areas and is being formally evaluated in partnership with academics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Programme Partners

The PHR programme is funded by and receives governance from the Legacy and Health Equity Partnership (LHEP): an NHS London programme, learning from COVID and putting communities at the centre to reduce inequalities in screening, immunisation and access to health. The prgramme is a partnership between LHEP, the UK Health Security Agency, NHS London, AIR (Asthma Innovation Research), Camden Council, Greater London Authority, London schools and young people themselves. The pilot programme also has ethics approval from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

  • Practical techniques that can help build better mental wellbeing
  • What to do if someone collapses
  • The purpose of immunisations and what vaccines protect against
  • What is screening and what is its benefits

Young people can learn, practice and ask questions from health professionals in a safe space.

PHR session content

These sessions are standalone and can be delivered in any order, giving young people the knowledge to access health systems confidently and appropriately, and understand their right to NHS care, as well as having the opportunity to discuss immunisations and key health issues in a safe space.

Access to Healthcare

The aim of this one hour session is to improve general health literacy and awareness about different healthcare services and how to access them.

Delivered by health professionals, the sessions are interactive and include scenario practice.

* An introduction to 
NHS healthcare and how to access what is available independently

* Exploration of available services ‘in-hours’ vs ‘out-of-hours’

* Scenarios around GP registration, obtaining medical advice, and collecting prescriptions

* Simulations calling GP, 111 and 999

* Signposting to services

* When help should be sought

Medical Emergencies 

The aim of this session is to improve health literacy around basic first aid and approach to the unwell individual.

This one hour workshop will be delivered by health professionals, outlining common emergency medical presentations including the collapsed individual, bleeding, tooth avulsion and burns management.

* Discussion around what constitutes an emergency and how to call for help

* Assessing the collapsed individual

* Understanding the importance of the airway and carrying out basic airway manoeuvres

* Burns care, tooth trouble, bleeding, and wound care

* Signposting to further information

Mental Health Resilience 

The aim of this session is to improve mental health literacy & resilience of young people age 16-18 and build trust between young people & health professionals. 

This one hour interactive workshop will be delivered by health professionals covering concepts & practice of mental health resilience, and when help should be sought. 

* Introduction to mental health ‘resilience’ and its impact, and 
when help should be sought

* Concepts around mental health 
vs illness and how to recognise changes

* Discussion around available services ‘in-hours’, ‘out-of-hours’ 
and in emergencies

* Practice of techniques that can help build mental wellbeing and resilience

* Signposting to services

Preventative Health

The aim of this one hour session, delivered by health professionals is to ensure young people have an understanding of the importance of preventative health. 

The protected time for discussion provides young people with a space space to ask questions and discuss concerns.

* Purpose of immunisations and what do vaccines protect against

* Vaccinations across the life course and how to access catch up vaccinations

* What is screening and what is its benefit

* How to seek clinical advice early if you are concerned
